2013 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game Drives Highest Economic Impact in its History
Strong TV Viewership Draws Millions of Eyes on Atlanta
ATLANTA (Nov. 1, 2013) – An estimated $44.3 million was injected into the Atlanta economy as a result of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game held Aug. 31, marking the highest economic impact in the event’s six-year history.
Chick-fil-A Bowl officials today released the results of an economic impact study that showed a $9.9 million increase over the previous high of $34.4 million for the LSU vs. North Carolina game in 2010. The study also showed a record $2.2 million in direct government revenue realized from lodging, sales, transportation and ticket taxes.
The match-up of #1 Alabama and Virginia Tech drew 73,114 fans to the metro Atlanta area over a two day period to account for the financial benefit to the city.
“This was a huge win for our hospitality sector and went a long way towards making sure our hotels and restaurants were filled over a busy Labor Day weekend,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. “As we continue to prove, college football is a significant driver for our local economy and something we can continue to count on year after year through both the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game and the Chick-fil-A Bowl.”
The economic impact study was conducted by Dr. Bruce Seaman, associate professor of economics at Georgia State. It further showed the following average per person per day spends:

“This was an unusually successful event from an economic impact perspective, but still represents what we feel is a realistic estimate," said Dr. Seaman. "While we do not expect to see numbers this high year after year, there is no doubt as to the magnitude of the positive effect this game has on our metro Atlanta economy.”
Over its six-year history, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has now drawn 491,438 fans to Atlanta who have delivered a total economic impact of $239.7 million and created $10.6 million in direct government revenue for Atlanta. In total since the Chick-fil-A Bowl began tracking economic impact numbers in 1999, the organization has generated more than $672 million in positive economic impact and $29 million in direct tax revenue between its Bowl and Kickoff Game events.
Strong TV Viewership Puts Millions of Eyes on Atlanta
The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game did more than deliver a financial boost to Atlanta, it delivered a substantial number of eyeballs on the city as well.
The Crimson Tide-Hokies match-up earned an ESPN TV rating of 3.0 which equates to the game being watched in 3.4 million households and by an estimated 5.1 million individual viewers. The game was the second most-viewed game of the opening weekend on the ESPN family of networks behind only the Clemson-Georgia game.
Since 2008, more than 32.3 million viewers have watched Chick-fil-A Kickoff Games on ESPN.
