ATLANTA (Dec. 29, 2012) -- Off the field competition between LSU and Clemson began days before their kickoff as both teams faced off in five events to determine the champion of the Chick-fil-A Bowl‘s Battle for Bowl Week.
The competition began Dec. 26 with a basketball arcade game at the Team Welcome Parties at Dave and Buster’s in Marietta. Three members from each school played the “Nothing But Net” basketball game to see who could combine to make the most shots. The Clemson trio of DeAndre Hopkins, Adam Humphries and Corey Crawford secured the win for Clemson as they combined to hit 55 baskets in a minute and 30 second time period. Humphries set a Battle for Bowl Week record with 24 baskets, including a streak of 16 consecutively made shots.
Day two of the Battle for Bowl Week brought on a racing challenge as the teams were pitted against each other to see who could average the fastest lap time at Andretti Indoor Karting. Clemson posted an average lap time of 40.656, inching past LSU’s time of 41.152 to take the 2-0 lead in the quest for the Battle for Bowl Week bragging rights.
LSU players ate their way back into the competition at Sal Grosso’s Brazilian Steakhouse as the team’s competed to see who could consume the most protein. While Clemson gave its best effort consuming 454 pounds of beef, chicken and pork, LSU combined to eat a staggering 624 pounds.
The fourth competition featured a Milkshake Combine in which the offensive lines from each school raced to prepare five types of Chick-fil-A’s famous milkshakes. While it looked as if Clemson had secured the title, the squad was penalized 20 seconds due to the milkshakes not matching up to Chick-fil-A’s quality standards. The decision by the judges tied up the competition as LSU correctly prepared all milkshakes in just 2:47.
With the Battle for Bowl Week belt on the line, the teams headed into the game-show style Football Feud to determine the champion. The players and coaches worked together to guess the most popular answers to survey questions such as “favorite football movie” and “things you hope your coach will forget.” The Clemson team walked away with a convincing 200-50 victory, crowning them Battle for Bowl Week Champions.
