Oct. 30: Hitting the Road

One thing was clear coming out of our Team Selection Committee meeting Monday night … our scouts are anxious to hit the road and start seeing some games in person. We spent most of the meeting going over our travel schedule to make sure we see all the teams from the ACC and SEC at least once over the next five weeks.

We’ll start with six games this week. Be sure to check my Blog on Friday when we release the list of games we’ll be scouting on Saturday.

Also, make sure you follow us on Twitter (@chickfilabowl) because each week we’ll feature 2-3 games where our scouts will Tweet from the road to give you a behind-the-scenes look into what they do at a game.

Our scouts will get to campus early to take in the atmosphere and enjoy some of the great traditions in the ACC and SEC. So if we’re headed to your campus, be sure and Tweet us some must-do’s while we’re there.

In this Blog each Wednesday, I’ll try to give you a look at the “Short List” of teams in each conference that are in our selection process. Keep in mind that this list will change each week as teams win or lose and that we will be projecting that list based on what we think is most likely to happen the rest of the season. There is still a long way to go, and we expect it to change as we narrow the field, but here is where we’ll start out.

Our current ACC short list (in alphabetical order):

Team   W-L   Best Win   Toughest Game Left  Trending
#8 Clemson       7-1  Georgia   USC Rebound win maintains rank.
Duke   6-2  VT   Miami   Up after big win at VT.
#3 FSU   7-0  Clemson    Miami   High in wake of win at Clemson.
Georgia Tech   5-3  Duke   Clemson   Snapped 0-3 with 2-0 streak.
#7 Miami   7-0  Florida   FSU  Battle tested in 7-0 start.
Virginia Tech   6-2  GT   Miami                           Down after Duke loss.

There is a lot to like here with the ACC having one of its best years and three teams in the top 10. With the Chick-fil-A Bowl selecting first in the ACC (after the BCS), we are sure to get a great team that is highly ranked and will come in with a strong resume.

Our current SEC short list (in alphabetical order):

Team   W-L  Best Win  Toughest Game Left  Trending
#11 Auburn  7-1 Texas A&M  Alabama  Climbing. Only loss to #13 LSU.
Florida   4-3 Tennessee  FSU Down after losses to ranked teams.
Georgia   4-3 USC Auburn   Injuries mean 0-2 after 4-0 streak.
#13 LSU   7-2 Auburn   Alabama   Up. Rebounded to win 3 of last 4.
#14 S. Carolina 6-2 Missouri  Clemson   High after tough road win vs. Mizz.
#12 Texas A&M  6-2 Ole Miss   Missouri   Won 4 of 5 after Alabama game.

Another list of great options. As usual, the SEC is loaded with talented teams, but we see a little more parity this year than in the past. We expect to see these teams rough each other up a little more before we can get a better idea of who might be headed to Atlanta. All these teams still have critical games left to be played, so we’ll keep a close eye on them the rest of the way.

As always, feel free to share a post with your argument on why we should take a closer look at your team. We love the feedback. Enjoy this week’s games!

Won't the BCS probably take two teams from the ACC this year?
