Nov. 20: Nearing the End

With three weekends remaining in the college football season, we are starting to near the end and Selection Sunday on Dec. 8 is fast approaching.

In light of that, we spent a large part of our Team Marketing and Selection Committee meeting Monday night starting to project what teams will fill the BCS Bowl slots. This is important because that is the first domino that needs to fall before we can project the teams that will remain for our selection pool.

We heard detailed reports from the three games we scouted this week (Georgia Tech at Clemson, Miami at Duke and Georgia at Auburn) and confirmed our scouting schedule for this week. We’ll see another three games on Saturday which we’ll announce on the blog on Friday.

The discussion turned to other key games from the week that may impact our selection. Of note in the ACC were the victories by Clemson and Duke. In the SEC, we talked about the victories by Ole Miss and South Carolina that will keep them on our short lists this week. And like everyone else, we spent a lot of time recounting the amazing finish in the Georgia-Auburn game that will go down as one of the great games in college football this year.

Our scouts are still tweeting from our games, so remember to follow us on Twitter (@chickfilabowl) and Instagram (@chickfilabowl), and send us a tweet to give us some ideas on where to go while we’re on campus.

Let’s get on to the lists for this week. We’ll continue to try and narrow the field while leaving any team on that is still in our selection process.

NOTE: Teams are listed in alphabetical order, not order of preference.

Our current ACC short list:

Team   W-L   Best Win   Toughest Game Left  Trending
#7 Clemson       9-1 Georgia   #11 South Carolina Still a contender if not in the BCS.
Duke   8-2 Miami  North Carolina   Big win vs. Miami. Leads Coastal.
Georgia Tech  6-4 Duke    Georgia  Must win out and get some help.
Miami     7-3 Georgia Tech Pitt Fading after 3 straight losses.
Virginia Tech  7-4 Miami Virginia   Must win to get to 5-3 in the ACC.

The Seminoles drop off the list this week as it becomes less likely they will be there for us to consider. The remainder of the list stays the same this week. We’ll have a special eye on Duke-Wake Forest game and the UVa-Miami game this week. Watch out for the tie-breaker scenario! With the right combination of wins and losses, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and B.C. or Syracuse could all finish at 5-3 in the conference.

Our current SEC short list:

Team   W-L   Best Win   Toughest Game Left  Trending
Georgia      6-4 South Carolina Georgia Tech Holding on, but needs some help.
#22 LSU 7-3 Auburn  #12 Texas A&M Need to rebound at home vs. A&M.
#8 Missouri  9-1 Georgia   #12 Texas A&M 2 tough games could get Mizzou here.
#24 Ole Miss 7-3 LSU #8 Missouri Rolling with 4 straight wins.
#11 South Carolina 8-2 Missouri #7 Clemson Still counting down to Clemson.
#12 Texas A&M   8-2  Ole Miss  #8 Missouri   Finishing with 2 tough SEC games.

After its thrilling win against Georgia, Auburn will fall from the list this week due to their potential to move up to the BCS with a win or even a loss against Alabama. The Bulldogs will hang on for now. We’ll add Missouri to the list this week due to the two tough SEC opponents they have to close out the season. A slip in either or both could create a path for the Tigers to Atlanta. The remainder of the list stays the same with some critical games left on the schedule for most of them – especially in the rivalry games with ACC opponents like Georgia and South Carolina.

What’s the best match-up you see in store for the Chick-fil-A Bowl this year. Give us your thoughts.

Enjoy this week’s games!

After we beat Duke, pick the up and coming and most exciting team in the ACC (after Clemson and FSU)! We love Atlanta and Atlanta will love us (again). Georgia vs Carolina would be awesome!
Georgia vs. Miami

Coach Richt vs. his alma mater...Canes will be 9-3...Va. Tech will be 8-5 after losing big to FSU in ACC Championship. UNC beats Duke this weekend. IF Clemson falls below the BCS, a matchup with Texas A&M would be stellar! Boyd vs. Manziel!!

Tar Heels vs UGA. With the Heels getting off to a terrible start this year they could end up on a 7 game win streak. They will travel well and are extremely hot team right now. Especially when you consider Duke and Miami both do not have a good following and VT started the year in Atlanta. Go Heels!

Open up the Highway 85 gates for a North/South Carolina Challenge game. The Spurrier Bowl will attract a huge crowd from both states. Don't underestimate Duke.
GO DAWGS !!!

Hopefully VT will get picked to be in there. Even if Duke wins the Coastal, I would like Vt. We definitely would bring a bigger crowd! I'd love to see a VT vs Georgia/A&M game. Hey, or vs any team on the list!

I think Clemson will be in the Orange Bowl (regardless of whether they lose to USC) as long as FSU is in the National Championship game...Duke seems to have a good shot here and actually had the highest ticket sales for a bowl game in the ACC last year. Georgia would obviously be a great selection for the game in Atlanta if they can finish out the season well.

I think you are looking at a LSU vs. Clemson rematch. Clemson will loose to Carolina and knock themselves out of the BCS. Alabama and Auburn will be in BCS bowls. Carolina, Mizzou, and A&M will be in the Capital One, Outback, and Cotton Bowls. Ole Miss has a shot of making this bowl as well depending how they finish.
Rematch!!!!!

How about a Georgia-Clemson rematch? Two great historical rivals and two great fan bases. Give the SEC and the Dawgs a chance to tie up the series.
Pick Duke
